Woodford Update / Love of Dosh

so yea,

map project took / is taking much longer than expected but its cool cus it turns out the deadline wasn't so deadliney after all.

almost done i think. just have to see a man in the morning about a framing solution then figure out how to mount it so all the little cuts i made get light goin through them, label it (cus it IS still spose to be a map) and yea.

Mapping Woodford

hello.

i'm working on a commission. i kinda get to do whatever i want, the only stipulation being that the piece includes something innately trinidadian. since i was was just waiting for a reason to do a real map of woodford square (i'd done a sketch early last week for a work related thing but wasnt required to do any real mapping) this request came along at the perfect time.

i've never done anything like this before so its fun stumbling around tryna figure out how to kinda simplify / idealise some of the features and deciding what to put in and generally how the thing should look. i want it to look illustrative but not too cartoonish and still sort of like a real map. i spent the little bits of free time between other jobs on the weekend making studies. i havent figured everything out yet but i need to hurry up cus it has to be done by tomorrow so im in for a long night.

here are some preliminaries.

feedback would be great. i need to get more ppl reading this blog.

Meaningless Things

on my explaining that my unproductive weekend was depressing and that since i produced nothing noteworthy i had no reason to blog, dave remarked

"so yuh only showin good things.. the little frou frou parts and none of the bad things? in other words, being dishonest?"

and was right. so here we are.
the production of things that had no meaning lead to questions:

if a thing is created wihout meaning / for no specific purpose, can it be valuable?
if yes, how?? if no, why?
meaning = value?
how important is imagination? i.e something that is wonderful that is imagined that has no place in the real world.

the questions led to an idea. an event. details of which i'll have to keep in order for it to work the way it should but on sunday night in a maxi the shittiness of the weekend worked in my favor and showed me how to solve the problem.

Kings and Queens!

THIS is new king and this is what royalty looks like.



new king is one of a set of drawings called 'kings and queens' that im working on with ms. brianna mc carthy .

unless the universe fucks us they will become the main elements in a set of dread-o one colour screen printed t-shirts and go on to thoroughly rule all things rulable.

although, probably not as rulably as ms. mc carthy's 'thirty girls' a-girl-a-day drawing project.

lotta new things today! (well yesterday, technically)

lucked out at deltex and got this friggin.. bess! lil sketch book. last one. and i was in need. perfect bound; blank on the covers, save for a small uninked letterpressed logo at the back; no annoying endpapers; bright orange bookmark and strong elastic band around it. plus new pens and crap.

win.

then, on the way from deltex i saw this little sign at the edge of a fenced up empty lot that still read 'no parking in front of driveway'. i thought it was cool cus it makes it apparent that there was a house there before, and that there was a driveway and a gate and all that, and a person to paint the sign. it was kinda shakily hand painted. charming in a way.

was around 11am and pretty sunny so i got a chance to mess around with the polarising and uv filters richard lent me. it was pretty cool and i got a couple photos of the sign and lot that i liked.





i messed around in the sketchbook too. drew a lazy cat that i know. came out pretty cool. i got that meaningless feeling again after finishing it but i like the drawing. i havent finished determining if a thing like that has any value though; something that i like to look at, but doesnt really mean anything. i dunno. i like it though.

i like to draw and paint and take photos and make things but lots of times the things i draw and paint and take photos of and make are meaningless in the world and have no place. but sometimes they mean a lot and fit right in with the world.

im making this place for all of my things and im superfuckingexcited about it.

the made-up term 'freepaper' has something to do with the super valuable reckless abandon this young man experiences when drawing or writing on crumpled little scraps or dirty bits of paper; pressure-free-paper, guilt-free-paper, possibility-for-disastrous-mistake-free-paper; as opposed to the stiffness or caution with which said young man is likely to approach a large, fresh, epitome-of-expectation-esqe sheet of paper. something to do with confidence. something to do with honesty. for sure.

many things i learned this year. among them is the value of making every 'sheet of paper' free.
